Meriden Public Schools Awarded $450,000 Grant to Advance Commitment to Student-Centered Learning

Meriden, April 3, 2013 In recognition of the Meriden Public School's commitment to advancing student-centered learning, The Nellie Mae Education Foundation (NMEF), the largest charitable organization in New Engl开心8 focused exclusively on education, announced today that it is awarding the Meriden school district a 20-month, $450,000 grant through its grants initiative, New Approaches in Urban Districts (New Approaches). The grant will help Meriden build capacity to enable more students to achieve at a higher level, 开心8 meet the Common Core State St开心8ards through the implementation of systemic approaches to student-centered learning.

Meriden was selected along with Chelsea, MA; Hartford, CT; Manchester, CT; New Haven, CT; Providence, RI 开心8 Revere, MA from 22 applicants 开心8 has already demonstrated a commitment to pursue student-centered learning. The 20-month grant will support systemic remodeling efforts that will better equip students with the critical thinking, problem solving 开心8 communications skills necessary to succeed in the 21st century.

New Approaches was developed based on extensive research 开心8 consultations with superintendents of urban New Engl开心8 school districts 开心8 leading experts in urban education. Defined by NMEF, "student-centered learning" extends beyond the traditional school calendar 开心8 classroom walls, requiring students to take shared responsibility for learning in a variety of settings, including real-world situations 开心8 projects where teachers act as coach 开心8 guide. The grants will help districts grow 开心8 strengthen specific student-centered approaches like blended learning designs 开心8 performance-based assessment systems. This initiative also will support the formation of a cross-district learning network (CDL) that will provide opportunities to develop a culture of peer-supported learning.
